The Old: Leticia and Rodrigo commiserate about being miserable over coffee, and Rod picks up on Leti’s jealousy over Sergio stepping out with Gloria. Nora greets Marcelo and Lucia at the foot of the stairs with the Plot Pistol aimed right at them. She blames Lucia for all her woes, and swears that if she can’t have Marcelo, neither can Lucia! She fires a shot that goes wild and destroys a talavera pot that was minding its own business. Marcelo rushes her and they wrestle wildly for the gun. Another shot rings out in the middle of the struggle, and Marcelo, Nora, and Lucia all seem paralyzed with shock.

The New:  Marcelo realizes that neither he nor Nora were hit by the bullet, and he snatches the gun from her hands while her guard is down. Lucia calls out his name, and when he and Nora turn to face her, they see a stream of blood running down the right leg of her green dress, from where the bullet entered her thigh. Lucia’s shock turns into intense pain, and she begins to scream and collapses to the floor. Marcelo drops the gun and quickly goes to cradle Lucia as her pain and screams intensify. Two gunshots, one shattered pot, and many screams later, Alonso and Rebeca finally emerge from their heated bedroom argument, and run down the stairs demanding to know what the hell is going on. Al is overwhelmed and totally confused by what he sees. In reply to his question about what happened, Marcelo looks from the gun to Nora, who is rooted to the foot of the stairs, wild-eyed, a silent scream stuck in her throat. There’s no time to waste arguing, and so Marcelo and Alonso take hold of Lucia and carry her away so that she can be transported to the hospital.

Rebeca remains alone with Nora. She looks from the gun to Nora, and screams at her, demanding to know what she’s done. She continues screaming at her as she shakes her. Nora escapes her grasp, runs upstairs, and locks herself in her room, with Rebeca hot on her heels.

Leti finally makes it home, in time for an interrogation from a worried Sara—Leti left her phone and her car, but no note. Sara is utterly confused when Leti says he was with Rod, but their discussion is interrupted by a call from frantic Al. Sara says she’s on her way, then tells Leti that Lucia was shot! Leti’s going to the hospital too.

Rod also finally gets home and tells Sergio he took his advice and went to see his depressed daddy. Sergio’s night wasn’t the greatest either. He thinks he made a mistake inviting Gloria to the wedding. Rod gives Sergio his own advice—fix things before it’s too late.  (“Pon el remedio, antes que ser demasiado tarde.”) He then mentions he had coffee with Leti. “Looks like she’s in as bad a shape as I am—we’re both alone.” Sergio seems taken aback to learn his guy bestie and gal bestie went out together.

In the hospital, Marcelo has to calm Al down, who’s demanding to be able to see his daughter! He then moves on to demand more info about where Nora got a gun. Marcelo tells him, and now Al is pissed that they didn’t tell him about this sooner. When Marcelo says they thought they could handle it, Al points out the obvious that they couldn’t and didn’t!

Back at Casa Gaxiola, Rebeca is back downstairs, staring at the trail of blood Lucia left behind, and the gun that’s still on the floor where Marcelo dropped it. She has a mini freakout as she remembers Federico shooting himself in the head in front of her with that very gun. She picks it up gingerly, then places it on the ground once again, trembling.

Sara and Leti join Al and Marcelo in the hospital. While Sara goes back to see what info she can get about Lucia’s condition, Leti waits with Marcelo and a very worried Al. Sara comes back some time later to tell them that luckily, the bullet didn’t hit any bone or vital arteries, and Lucia will be fine. She’ll be out of it because of the drugs, but they’ll be able to see her as soon as she’s moved to her room. Marcelo and Leti run off to the room to wait for Lucia, but Sara keeps Al behind to tell him that the hospital has to report any bullet wounds, and the police will be coming at some point.

Marcelo and Leti greet a mostly asleep Lucia as she’s wheeled in, then leave Al alone with her. He crouches by her hospital bedside in a way that reminds Viewerville, and certainly must remind him, of the day Adriana died in that very same hospital. He strokes and kisses her forehead, and tells her he can’t lose her too.

Magdalena and Mario have made it all the way to the airport in D.F., but Magda can’t get into honeymoon mode. She keeps thinking that the arrival of Rebeca at their wedding was like a bird of ill omen (ave de mal agüero), and even though she’s never gotten along well with Nora, she’s worried about her. She thinks they should call to see how she is. Mario kisses away her worries—they’d know by now if anything bad had happened, and gets her hyped for their honeymoon in Cancun. She still has a bad feeling (presentimiento) that something is wrong once they arrive in Cancun, but Mario talks her down again.

Al is determined to not to leave Lucia’s side until he can take her home the next day. Marcelo, Leti and Sara remind him that he has to take care of his own health and rest. He’s only convinced to go when Sara tells him he needs to go home for Nora. Al then starts to worry about Nora and how his poor baby is doing after shooting her sister. He leaves Marcelo in charge of taking care of Lucia. Marcelo asks Al to recover the gun for him when he gets home. He then calls Momster to tell her he’s staying in the hospital with Lucia, who had an “accident”. When she gets off the phone, Mili tells Rafaela she’s sure Lucia’s just faking it, to keep Marcelo by her side and away from Mili. “Why do you always have to think the worst of that girl? What is it exactly that you don’t like about her?” “Everything! Absolutely, everything!”

Al gets home and finds Rebeca sitting on the stairs, staring at the trail of blood. He gives her the update on Lucia and asks for one on Nora. Rebeca saying she doesn’t know and hasn’t seen Nora since they all left, is just unacceptable to Al. Rebeca is feeling all kinds of sorry for herself and sobs that Nora doesn’t want to see her. Al wants to know why she never told him that Nora had the gun. If she had told him, perhaps he could have prevented this from happening (he’s also starting to clutch at his heart attack arm). Al starts talking about the legal trouble Nora will likely be in, and Rebeca’s not having it. She wants Al to call Mario back from his honeymoon and keep her baby out of jail. Al refuses to ruin Mario’s honeymoon, but he will find a way to help Nora—perhaps Dr. Andrade can give testimony about Nora’s mental health that would help. R: My daughter is not crazy! A: I swear that I’m not so sure anymore.

Al knocks on Nora’s door. She’s unresponsive, but this time he’s prepared and has the keys. He and Rebeca find Nora on the floor, curled up in the fetal position. He picks her up off the floor, and she swears to him that she didn’t want to hurt anyone. Al assures her that he believes her, lets her know that Lucia will be ok, and hugs and kisses her to try to comfort and calm her. Nora looks completely broken, and Rebeca seems to know that she broke her. Rebeca runs out of the room to have a cry in the hallway.

The next morning, Marcelo feeds Lucia green hospital Jello. She thanks him for taking care of her, and tells him how terrified she was that he’d get hurt when Nora pointed the gun at him. Marcelo laments that she was the one who ended up getting hurt, and says that now Nora will have to pay the consequences. Before Lucia can answer, Detective Juarez and his junior detective arrive to take Lucia’s statement. To Marcelo’s shock and consternation, Lucia says the shooting was all HER fault—the result of her inexperience while handling a gun. Marcelo lets them know the gun is his and he has all the registration paperwork. Detective J is all kinds of suspicious of Marcelo, but his underling (who interviewed Marcelo after his stabbing), says he has all of Marcelo’s deets. Marcelo just has to come down to the station ASAP with that gun and the paperwork. After the cops leave, Lucia has some ‘splainin’ to do. She tells Marcelo that she didn’t rat Nora out because she’s her sister, and she has more than enough problems at the moment, without jail being one of them. Marcelo is NOT in agreement that this is the best way to help Nora. Lucia thanks him for not ratting her out (desmentir) in front of the cops.

Outside, the cops are still suspicious. Detective J wants a report from the doctors on the trajectory of the bullet, and if Lucia could have really shot herself by accident, as she claims. They think she might be covering for someone. “Lately, that girl’s family has been in a lot of legal trouble.” Junior detective reminds Juarez that Marcelo was a recent stabbing victim in front of the family’s business. “That’s a lot of problems for one family…”

Al gets the gun from Rebeca, who has locked it in her nightstand (ironically under a photo of Nora).  As she hands it to him and asks him to get rid of it, she mentions that this gun has provoked many tragedies. Al informs her that Dr. Andrade is seeing Nora right now and will go on seeing her, and too bad if Rebeca isn’t in agreement!

In her room, Nora is in her bed, staring off into space, as Dr. Andrade does all the talking. He stands up so that she can’t avoid seeing him. “The moment has come for you to decide if you want help, or not….Nora, if you want to continue with therapy, you know where to find me.” He leaves, but he seems to have somewhat broken through Nora’s fog. Once downstairs, he tells Al that things went badly, but he made it clear to her that they can’t help her if she doesn’t let them. Al asks Roman if he could make a statement about Nora’s mental health to the police. Roman agrees to give his medical opinion, if needed. He asks after Lucia’s health before he departs.

Poor Tere has been left out of the loop of all the drama, but knows something really bad went down. Al sits her down to tell her.

In the hospital, Marcelo has been pensive ever since the cops left. He tells Lucia that he’s going to tell Al everything TODAY. He can’t keep quiet anymore. Lucia tries to talk him out of it, but he won’t be swayed. Leti comes to visit with Lucia, giving Marcelo a break to go home to shower (and go have that long-delayed conversation with Al). Lucia must pretend that all is well in front of Leti, but she’s obviously panicked about the bomb Marcelo is about to explode in the middle of her already fractured family.

The visit from Rod has put the pep back in Amador’s step. Brigida’s pleased to see him up, dressed, and not drunk. Amador points out that her concern means that she still cares for him. She wouldn’t have stayed with him this long if she didn’t, she counters. “I know it’s hard for you to believe, but the only woman I’ve ever really loved is you.” She throws Ligia in his face, and he quickly says it was nothing more than a fling. Brigida asks him straight up if he killed Ligia. Amador tempts Karma and Fate by swearing on Rod’s life that he did not kill that woman. Then he tenderly kisses Brigida’s hand and lips, and embraces her.

Marcelo comes home and tells Mili the official story of Lucia accidentally shooting herself with the gun Fede shot himself with. Mili freaks the hell out, and tells him to get rid of the damn thing already! Rafa wants to know the real story, since she knows Nora was the one who stole the gun from his room. Marcelo tells her, but warns her to stick to the official story, which is what they told the cops. Rafa is also Team Get-Rid-of-the-Damn-Gun! Marcelo says he will—after he tells Al the truth today.

Al arrives with clothes for Lucia, ready to check her out of the hospital. Unfortunately, that’s not happening because Lucia is bleeding out. After Al, Lucia and Leti have a group freakout, Sara later tells Al that Lucia is having a blood clotting/coagulation issue, and needs to stay for more tests. They’ll put her on meds to help her blood clot, and then she should be able to go home. Al tells Sara that he trusts her, and is leaving Lucia in her hands. He calls Marcelo with an update, and they make plans to meet at the office, where Al will give Marcelo the gun, and Marcelo will discuss something very important with Al. He’s just been looking at the Plot Earring, and seems more determined than ever to reveal the truth.

Back in Casa Gaxiola, Rebeca is trying yet again to get back into Nora’s good graces. “You don’t know how much it hurts me to see you this way. You’re the most important thing in life to me, and I can’t stand to see you suffer.” Nora turns her face away, even as Rebeca climbs onto the bed with her, and places her face inches away from Nora’s. Nora finally turns to face her mother, but only to tell her that she wants Rebeca to get away from her. Rebeca looks like she’s just been slapped. She retreats in defeat. Nora quietly cries to herself.

After Al told Tere the gossip, she called Lalo, who told Normita, and now they are both telling Nazario, who’s ticked off that Al didn’t call him last night to tell him his goddaughter had been shot! He’s ready to rush off to the hospital, but Lalo and Normita convince him to wait for Al to arrive to give them the update on Lucia’s condition.

When Al finally arrives at the fabrica, Marcelo is already waiting for him in his office. Al’s worried that the police will arrive at any moment to take Nora away. Marcelo explains that Lucia took the blame for the shooting, and didn’t involve Nora’s name in any way. Al is surprised, but not shocked. It’s just the kind of noble/selfless thing Lucia would do. She’s too noble at times. Marcelo agrees, then asks about the pistol. Al hands it to him, and tells him to lock the damn thing up. Marcelo confesses that this is the gun his brother took his own life with. “And even so, you keep it?” Al is also Team Get-Rid-of-the-Damn-Gun! Marcelo explains that it belonged to his father, and is one of the few reminders he has of him. Plus, he doesn’t want to forget what happened to his brother, and that what he did was because of a woman who betrayed him.

M: Remember that I was about to tell you who she is?
A: Yes, but I imagine that this is hurting you a lot, and it’s not good to be reminded of it.
M: It’s VERY important for me to clarify this. I ask your forgiveness for the pain this is going to cause you, but I think it’s time for you to know.

The words start tumbling out, and Marcelo begins to quickly tell Al how that woman was present when his brother took his life, that she fled and left him there without knowing if his brother were dead or injured (herido), and that she left a souvenir behind next to his brother’s body. Marcelo takes the earring out of his pocket, and places it in front of Al.
M: Do you recognize it?
A: (Al’s eyes begin to fill with tears.) Is it Rebeca’s?
M: Yes. Rebeca is the reason I’m here. I came here looking for her to avenge the death of my brother!

WEDNESDAY ON KILL ME HEAL ME - EPISODE 19 ON JOY PRIME @ 6: AM

Chief Ahn stands guard in the hallway outside Do-hyun’s new office, until a noise from inside draws his attention. He enters the office, where Do-hyun and Ri-jin are embracing and giggling like a pair of high-school sweethearts.

The chief reprimands Do-hyun for being so careless in the office, with hostile eyes and ears all around. The shareholders’ meeting is approaching, and Do-hyun has to be at his most focused. Chief Ahn tells Ri-jin to wait at the apartment.

Ri-jin tries to sneak out of the office, but runs into Ki-joon on the way out. He recognizes her immediately, in spite of her spy shades.



Ki-joon reminds Ri-jin of how they met, joking that they must have been fated to meet again. But he soon reveals his true motive by asking Ri-jin to take his side in the next shareholders’ meeting. If she does, he will make sure she receives the stocks she’s entitled to by birth.

Ri-jin informs him that she hates taking sides, so they have nothing more to talk about. Ki-joon tries to get her to stay, but Ri-jin says she no longer works at the company and that she can leave whenever she wants.

Ki-joon’s secretary searches for a locker that can be opened by Alex’s key. If the information they find is useful, Ki-joon will authorize more money to be sent to Alex in return for knowledge of Do-hyun’s weakness.



Do-hyun finds Alex’s hotel room, where his former friend wakes up after a night of binge drinking, still bloody from Se-gi’s harsh treatment. Alex demands payment, while Do-hyun says it’s partly his fault that Alex ended up this way. Instead of paying him to keep his mouth shut, Do-hyun should have simply punched him and moved on—maybe then Alex wouldn’t have fallen into gambling and drugs.

Now Do-hyun refuses to pay up. “If you expose my secret,” he tells Alex, “I’ll come back and punch you. Because you’re still my friend.”

But once he leaves the hotel room, Do-hyun tells Chief Ahn to settle Alex’s gambling debts and arrange for him to enter rehab. He doesn’t think of it as paying Alex off or getting him out of the way, but rather as a way of atoning for past mistakes by giving Alex a chance to get his life back on track.

Ki-joon receives a call from Alex, who gives him the location of the locker. Ki-joon’s secretary finds it and uses the key to open it… but there’s nothing there.

At the apartment, Chief Ahn reveals that Alex changed his mind at the last moment, so he was able to clear out the locker before Ki-joon’s secretary got to it. The locker had contained a set of movies that all featured multiple personalities, which definitely would have been enough to tip off Ki-joon.

Now that Do-hyun has a little breathing room, Chief Ahn urges him to find some weakness they can use to attack Ki-joon’s side at the shareholders’ meeting. Do-hyun wants everything to be aboveboard, however; he wants to win his own way, not his grandmother’s. At that moment a call comes in with news that makes Do-hyun rush outside right away.



The man who called has news about Min Seo-yeon’s car accident, which may not actually have been an accident. The driver on the day of the crash was new, and even though Grandpa and Seo-yeon were supposedly heading to the airport with all possible haste, the site of the crash was in the suburbs—not directly on the way to the airport.

Chief Ahn reminds Do-hyun that he shouldn’t believe their informant completely without further confirmation. Still, Do-hyun wonders who had the most to benefit should the president and the chairman of Seungjin Group suddenly pass away.

Do-hyun’s mom visits her husband in his hospital room, and apologizes for using him. She is relieved now that Do-hyun has returned to the company, but she urges Joon-pyo to wake up so he can stand by Do-hyun’s side.



Do-hyun meets with Grandma Seo, who knows he has been looking into the car accident. She admits that there were many rumors flying around after the accident, but denies having had anything to do with it. Grandma changes the topic to the shareholders’ meeting, telling Do-hyun that they have a new ally who happens to be waiting just outside. The door opens, revealing Chae-yeon. Meanwhile, Ki-joon receives some paperwork from an American company, concerning Do-hyun’s medical records.

Chae-yeon tells Do-hyun what she offered Grandma Seo in exchange for her support. It was a cheap way to try to win Do-hyun back, but she says it was his fault for playing with her heart first. Do-hyun admits that he loves someone else, and finally tells Chae-yeon the truth. At the same time that Chae-yeon staggers down the stairs, shocked by the truth, Ki-joon reads the report revealing that Do-hyun has D.I.D.



At the family restaurant, Ri-jin receives a call from Do-hyun. He asks her to tell him again that she likes him, and Ri-jin puts up only a token protest before complying. “I miss you,” Do-hyun says.

Just like that, Ri-jin is packing up her things and leaving the restaurant, even though the sun is already down. Mom asks her to reconsider working for her mystery chaebol again, but Ri-jin only says that she’s lucky to have such a great base camp she can return to any time. She hugs Mom tightly, while Dad badgers her to hug him too.

Ri-on is uncharacteristically somber as he drives Ri-jin to Do-hyun’s apartment, telling her to keep her eyes straight ahead when she gives him a worried look. They reach the apartment and see Do-hyun, waiting in his little folding chair.

Ri-jin teases Do-hyun that he should install a bench in front of his apartment, since he always ends up sitting there. Ri-on arrives with Ri-jin’s luggage, but Do-hyun asks him to have a drink before he goes.

The two men share a drink, and Do-hyun apologizes for not keeping his promise to stay away from Ri-jin. “How can I blame you when my own sister was an accomplice?” Ri-on replies. He aks Do-hyun to think about the strange fate that connects the two of them to Ri-jin: If Seungjin Group had accepted her into the family, then it might have been Do-hyun who grew up seeing Ri-jin like a sibling.

But it was Ri-on, and so he had to make a difficult decision. He chose to become the world’s best brother, because that’s who Ri-jin needed most. Ri-on asks Do-hyun to look after Ri-jin from now on, and to keep her from getting hurt.

Ri-on walks alone along the street, remembering all the moments he tried to help Ri-jin. He starts to cry as he thinks of all the hardships she went through, while he could only support her as a brother. “I can do that for you,” he says in voiceover. “I’ll only be your brother.”

Do-hyun wanders back to his apartment, and this time Ri-jin is outside waiting for him. He sits next to her and surprises her by speaking in banmal. When she asks why he’s suddenly speaking like Se-gi, he replies that they were already friends many years ago, and they should speak however they feel like in the moment.

“I miss you,” Do-hyun whispers. Even when they’re together, he misses her. No matter what happens, he says, they have to be happy. Ri-jin smiles and lays her head down on his shoulder.



Ri-jin and Do-hyun meet with Dr. Seok, who is pleased to hear that they both have a rough understanding of what happened in the past, as well as the sources of most of Do-hyun’s personalities. He lists possibilities for long-term treatment, but Do-hyun and Ri-jin prefer to work together, matching their piecemeal memories and supporting each other.

Dr. Seok believes that this method may work, and then hilariously chides his student and former patient for being so obvious about holding hands in public. But in the end, he gives them his blessing.

Do-hyun and Ri-jin meet in his office for a consultation, where Ri-jin says that there’s no need to remove the personalities by force. They’re all part of Do-hyun, so he should simply accept himself as he is and match his memories together. Do-hyun agrees, but asks Ri-jin to start by sharing what she remembers.

Ri-jin remembers her first birthday after her mother passed away, when Do-hyun brought her a cake and a sparkler (I guess he always had a thing for fire…) and sang her Happy Birthday. He promised to take her to see the fireworks. That birthday became the happiest memory she had after realizing that her mother was never going to come back and take her away.

Do-hyun shares a memory of his own, from the days immediately after he had returned to the mansion. He didn’t know how to live in such a fancy place, and was often scolded for things like failing to memorize his multiplication tables. But Ri-jin was kind to him, setting up a picnic on the lawn where they could play house. Ri-jin placed her stuffed bear next to them—it was supposed to be their child, named Na-na.

In the present, Do-hyun thinks of something he wants to do. He invites Ri-jin to come with him, to a place where they can do what they always wanted to do as children.



Do-hyun and Ri-jin sit together on a carnival ride at the amusement park. For a moment, they see their younger selves waving at them, and Do-hyun waves back.

In the gift shop, Ri-jin looks around for presents she can give to Do-hyun’s personalities. She thinks about a new bear for Na-na, a model boat for Perry Park with his name across the side, and a diary for Yo-sub to write his poems in. She complains about Yo-na’s personality while picking out a pink headband, and asks Do-hyun what kind of present Se-gi might want.

The two of them walk around outside, visiting the carriage where Se-gi first kissed Ri-jin during the fireworks show. Ri-jin reflects that Se-gi has the worst emotional scar out of all the personalities, and Do-hyun says that unless Se-gi is able to let out his rage towards his father and Seungjin Group, he will never be able to disappear. Ri-jin asks what kind of father Joon-pyo was.



Do-hyun explains about the origin of the Perry Park persona, and how his resentment towards his father is mixed with his yearning for the time when he loved his father. Ri-jin asks him which is stronger—the resentment Se-gi carries, or the yearning embodied by Perry Park?

Do-hyun only asks how Ri-jin can be so calm, when she has every right to hate Joon-pyo with all her heart. While Ri-jin was terrified when her memories first started coming back, after a while she only felt empty.

Do-hyun knows that as long as Ri-jin suffers even a little bit from what his father did to her, Se-gi will always be liable to strike back. The only way for them both to move on is to forgive the perpetrator. In a hospital somewhere in Seoul, Joon-pyo’s fingers twitch suddenly.

Back at the apartment, Perry Park finds that someone has bought him a gift. He tests his new fishing rod with an expression of pure bliss, but that’s not all—Ri-jin has brought chicken and beer. Not just any beer, mind you, but her father’s best brew, the kind that Perry failed to taste last time.

Now Perry drinks to his heart’s content, and asks Ri-jin to tell her father that out of all the beers Perry Park has tasted during his life, this is the best. Ri-jin wonders why Perry is speaking as though he’s going away, and Perry replies that he’s the oldest of all the personalities, so he should set a proper example.

Ri-jin asks Perry why he tried so hard to save her during the Leather Jacket Incident. Was it because he felt guilty for not being able to save her from the fire twenty-one years ago? Perry scoffs, but not very convincingly. Then he says he has one final message to give Ri-jin before he leaves.

“Please take care of my kid,” Perry says. He feels confident that he can leave now, because he trusts Ri-jin to look after Do-hyun. And he asks Ri-jin to forget about the past and enjoy her life. He adopts as serious a tone as we’ve ever heard when he tells her to stay healthy.

“Maybe one more glass,” Perry muses now that he’s had his say, but as he reaches for the beer his head starts to hurt. He manages one last smile at Ri-jin and says he’s feeling sleepy, then falls face-first onto the table. Ri-jin starts crying in earnest, calling out to Perry.

We see Perry Park embarking on a journey in Do-hyun’s mind, armed with his fishing gear. He opens a door, and once the blinding light fades, he finds himself on a dock stretching out over the water, with a boat moored at the end. Perry salutes the boat which bears his name and smiles, while a single tear falls down his cheek.



Do-hyun wakes up, and Ri-jin lets him know that Perry Park has come and gone for the last time. He left Do-hyun a final message, that he should live freely. Those words remind him of what his father told him, before Seungjin Group tore the family apart.

Do-hyun’s mother has a drink with Grandma Seo, admitting that she’s had trouble sleeping since learning about Do-hyun’s affliction. She tells Grandma that she understands now how painful it must have been to see her son in a coma for all those years. Mom finally reveals her real reason for seeking out Grandma: Do-hyun has met with Min Seo-yeon’s child.

A shadowy figure sneaks into Ri-jin’s bedroom in the night. The next morning, Ri-jin and Do-hyun examine something strange in the living room. Chief Ahn arrives, saying that the cameras caught Do-hyun sneaking around just before dawn. “Could it be?” they gasp, staring at each other in horror. “The appearance of a new personality?!” The spray-painted X on the wall is their only reply.

A broken and battered Gil-dong is strung up to a post in the public square outside the palace gates. Taking pity on him, one of the Eorini girls holds a gourd of water to his lips while her internal dialogue says that she thinks it’s the most pitiful thing in the world to see someone dying of thirst. The other Eorini girl looks on with huge eyes and hurries her friend to leave.

Meanwhile in the palace, Mistress Jo tells Yeonsangun about the letter that his mother, the deposed Queen Yun, had left behind to a select group of noblemen, including the late Master Jo. The queen had written about how she wanted to hold Yeonsangun in her arms again, and the king weeps openly when he hears this about his mother.

Scholar Song (who introduced Mistress Jo to Yeonsangun) takes this opportunity to implant the idea that Yeonsangun’s father, the former king, was not the major deciding factor who wanted his mother deposed. He tells the king that the ones who are really responsible are the noblemen who influenced the former king to take such actions, and Yeonsangun’s eyes grow dark with fury.



Back at home and satisfied with his progress with the king, Scholar Song talks to Gil-hyun about the next actions to come. He also remarks about the strange coincidence that Gil-dong’s father was the one who burned the deposed queen’s letter. Gil-hyun keeps silent about his father, although he now realizes what danger they’re all in.

When Ga-ryung finally reaches Gil-dong after hearing about what has been happening to him, the king arrives in a rage about Amogae. He tells Gil-dong, who can barely open his eyes to look up at him, that his father went against social order by killing his master, but the real reason that Yeonsangun is angry is because Amogae burned his mother’s letter. Taking a nearby soldier’s sword, Yeonsangun readies to kill Gil-dong, saying that he will purge Gil-dong’s inherited insolence against those who are his betters.

Just in time, Gil-hyun comes to beg the king to let him kill Gil-dong, giving the reason that it’s beneath Yeonsangun to personally execute a lowly thief. With tears in his eyes, Gil-hyun volunteers to kill his own brother and brings up the sword. Then, the king calms down from his rage and decides that a better way to kill Gil-dong is to let him suffer in thirst and hunger. He leaves.

Ga-ryung then approaches the post where Gil-dong has collapsed. She comes near him, and frantic with tears, she tries to pull at the ropes stringing him up. But she’s taken away by soldiers to a jail, along with all the other people who took pity on Gil-dong and tried to give him water.



During a private audience, Gil-hyun suggests to Yeonsangun that he put Gil-dong in a cell instead of keeping him in the public’s eye, because if he doesn’t die, the people might think that he’s the Mighty Child again. Thinking on this idea, Yeonsangun agrees, and soon, soldiers take down Gil-dong’s limp body from the public post and carry him on a stretcher. He’s so motionless that most of the people surmise that he’s dead, and when Ga-ryung is told that Hong Gil-dong has died, her world turns dark.

But of course, he’s still alive, although orders from the king prevent anyone from giving him food or water. So as soon as he hears that his brother has been moved, Gil-hyun rushes to the cell to see Gil-dong. Bribing the guard with a pouch full of coins, Gil-hyun asks the guard to look over his brother, pretending that it’s for a hidden purpose of the king’s.



In his throne room, Yeonsangun begins his second round of terror: He states that his human hunting did cross the line, but he asks whether his courtiers are also not crossing the line by not giving him the proper respect he’s due. He punishes the Minister of Protocol for spilling wine on his robes, citing that he has disrespected Yeonsangun and thus, he’s betrayed the nation by his actions. However, the nobles gossip that the real reason behind the Minister of Protocol’s imprisonment, torture, and beheading was that he was the one who delivered the official poison that killed Yeonsangun’s mother, the deposed queen.

They also have heard that Yeonsangun called two of his father’s favorite concubines recently, and we see the gruesome scene laid out. The former king’s concubines lay in bloody white bags that are still wriggling while Yeonsangun surveys his handiwork with a wooden staff in his hands. His retinue looks terrified as they promise that this will be kept under wraps, but Yeonsangun tells them not to worry—he wants this rumor to be spread widely so that his subjects understand how angry he is.

He brings in two of his half-brothers, the ones who are the sons of the two women in the bags, just barely breathing. He hands them wooden sticks and orders them to beat their own mothers to death. He threatens them by saying if they don’t kill these witches who slandered his mother, he will kill them himself.

Despite this incredible personal violence, Yeonsangun’s rage is not satisfied, and he goes on a rampant killing spree against all the officials who had any hand in his mother’s dethronement. He tells his court to find all the people who were complicit, orders executions to the nth degree of those families, and parades their severed heads throughout the country to show an example of how traitors will be treated.

All the nobles seem horrified, but Scholar Song is happy that the people who took him from power are being punished through the king’s purge. He gathers Choongwongoon, Jeong-hak, and Mistress Jo, and tells them that they must now prove their loyalty to the king.



Choongwongoon meets with Yeonsangun and offers him Mori, because he has the same powers as Gil-dong. But Yeonsangun says it’s unnecessary and instead makes Mori an official in his government. When Mori is freed from prison, Choongwongoon is waiting for him outside, but instead of giving him a welcome, the royal slaps him for going against his orders to kill Gil-dong. Mori confesses that he only did so because Gil-dong spared his life once, and he promises to serve Choongwongoon loyally from now on.

Mori’s official position is the head of the task force that evicts commoners in order to make room for the expansion of the king’s hunting grounds. Under his orders, people are beaten and children are orphaned, and all the while, Gil-dong rots in prison.

From time to time, Yeonsangun visits Gil-dong to gloat and engage in in some introspection—the king tells his prisoner that many people think that he’s this way because he lost his mother when he was young. But even before his mother’s death, he thought that violence was the best way to rule and impose order.

In a different cell, the Hong brothers are all imprisoned together and suffering, but when they hear a rumor that Gil-dong has awakened, they rejoice. Nok-soo also hears the rumor from the Eorini girls and rushes to see him. When Yeonsangun finally gets ahold of the news, Nok-soo is already there, watching Gil-dong’s staggered steps with horror.



Gleeful, Yeonsangun takes his bow and begins aiming it at Gil-dong, who has retained just enough of his reflexes to avoid the arrows. Yeonsangun laughs at this new amusement and says that instead of hunting tigers, he’ll take sport in hunting Gil-dong. Nok-soo clutches her mouth, trying to hold in her tears as she watches her current lover firing arrows at her one and only past love.

Afterward, Nok-soo visits Gil-dong’s cell by herself while he eats gruel with his hands. She wipes his mouth lovingly, and he calls her Gong-hwa, but she tells him that Gong-hwa died when he left. She promises to help him go free if he survives, but as she leaves, she tells him that they are now strangers.



Yeonsangun gets the idea in his head to show Gil-dong’s mangled state to the Hong brothers in order to add an emotional element to the physical misery he already is enduring. The next day, the Hong band are laboring in the fields when a new face arrives from far away, being prodded by soldiers. At first they don’t recognize the man that’s being whipped until oblivion because he’s so bloody, pitiful, and lame. But when they realize it’s Gil-dong, they try to go toward him, and Ilchung tells Gil-dong to stand up.

It’s a plea and a command at the same time for him to show them that he’s still their “Great Elder,” but Gil-dong can’t manage it with all the soldiers continuously beating him. With tears in his eyes, Ilchung shouts at the soldiers not to touch Gil-dong, but they just turn on him and start beating all of the prisoners. The Hong brothers are taken away, and Gil-dong can’t do anything to stop it. Mori oversees all of this because it’s his soldiers who are beating Gil-dong and his friends.



The Hong brothers sit in a circle later in prison and cry as they think about Gil-dong’s reduced state. Segul begins talking, saying that the man on the field couldn’t possibly be Gil-dong, because the Great Elder can’t stand it when others touch his people, and that man couldn’t do anything about them being beaten. Everyone sheds tears as they think about Gil-dong.

During one of the court sessions, a dog scampers into the throne room and leaps up onto the king’s dais. Yeonsangun pets him fondly while the nobles mutter that it’s unseemly, but then the king brings up the matter of a boar that wandered into the palace gardens, and of rumors that leaked out into the public. Scared, the nobles immediately call for Yeonsangun to punish the ones among them who spread the rumors regarding the inner workings of the palace.

On a power high, Yeonsangun demands for more women to become part of his musical harem, and no one can say anything despite the dwindling treasury and lack of trained musicians. Ga-ryung, seeing the crowds of women entering the palace to become part of the king’s troupe, asks why they’re going. Outside the gates, she promises to avenge Gil-dong if it really was the king that killed him.

There aren’t enough gisaengs to fill his musical troupe, and Yeonsangun becomes visibly upset. But then Nok-soo suggests that they take anyone trained in the musical arts—be it peasant, gisaeng, or noblewoman—because everyone is the king’s servant. Taking a liking to this idea, Yeonsangun regards Nok-soo fondly and immediately commands for all women to be eligible for his troupe.

Later, Eunuch Kim confronts Nok-soo, demanding why she is adding to the king’s wayward direction and not chiding him from committing extreme actions. Nok-soo scoffs at his naivety and trust in Yeonsangun’s good will—she tells him to beware, because they also have no guarantee of living through the king’s reign. As she walks away, she repeats her mantra that she needs to live in order to save “that person” (presumably referring to Gil-dong).



The large festive banquet for the king is in session, and Nok-soo prepares her girls to perform. In the expansive palace courtyard, they begin a beautifully choreographed drum dance that moves with quick energy. Yeonsangun watches the performance with immense pleasure, drumming his fingers and bouncing his head to every note. Completely enthralled in the beat and Nok-soo’s seductive motions, he declares them the sound of Joseon, when suddenly a scream breaks out.

Committing a treasonous act or terror, someone has bloodied the royal robes. Instead of directing his anger at the person who actually did the deed, and perhaps out of fear, Yeonsangun begins beating the eunuch who found the robes and even demands that he be imprisoned. No one knows who the culprit is, but the scene cuts to Gil-dong and company. Now, Yeonsangun grows paranoid that every little misstep is a trap and a prank by a disloyal follower. Gil-hyun vows in his head that Yeonsangun should be afraid that the ones closest to him will betray him, hinting that he may possibly be the one behind the small accidents that are happening to the king.

At night, Yeonsangun lays his head on Nok-soo’s lap, worrying in a fetal pose about whether his recent misfortunes are due to the heavens’ anger. She pats him like a mother does to her child and asks why he should worry when he is the son of heaven, and he is instantly reassured.

Yeonsangun engages in a hunt and brings Nok-soo with him, but instead of deer, Gil-dong is the main target. He aims the first arrow to land near Gil-dong’s feet just to strike fear into him. Nok-soo tries to keep an impassive face, but she can’t help but grimace at the scene. Once he realizes that the king might actually kill him, Gil-dong starts hobbling away on his crippled limbs. He stumbles through the branches of the forest, tripping over logs and slipping on leaves.



Then he hears the two Eorini girls who are talking about the king, crying that they are afraid of their ruler. Other musical troupe members next to them are gossiping about how the king has been singling out the pregnant gisaeng. They wonder why, but then the girls spot Gil-dong behind him, who keeps on saying “Eorini, Eorini” because he has recognized Eorini’s voice.

But then, a net falls over his head—it’s Yeonsangun who laughs at how easy it was to catch this “Mighty Child,” but Gil-dong is still looking desperately toward the girls, one of whom is his dearly beloved sister. As Yeonsangun kneels down to be on Gil-dong’s level, he says that he’ll show Gil-dong how the country is being efficiently run under his rule.



So a soldier takes Gil-dong to witness firsthand the terrors that the king is imposing on his countrymen to enact “order.” Gil-dong is helpless as he watches people being evicted, families being torn apart, and properties being destroyed by the king’s soldiers. During his inner monologue, Gil-dong confesses to Gil-hyun that he’s done his fair share of violence in his life as a gangster, but seeing these people now, he feels only deep sorrow where he felt only endless rage before.

Alone in his cell, in the dark of night, Gil-dong thinks about all of Yeonsangun’s deeds as well as his father’s intended purpose for him to become the king’s general and makes a resolution. He resolves to become the king himself, and like that, his health seems to be restored. He stands up straight, his lame leg straightening as he faces the moonlight.
